Frequently Asked Questions
How to Elope in Ireland
We’re so excited you’re thinking about eloping in Ireland!
We know planning a wedding, especially from abroad can feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve helped plenty of couples have their dream Irish elopement, and we’re here to help you too!
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. If there’s anything else on your mind, just give us a shout, we’re always happy to chat!
Why should we elope in Ireland?
Where do we start? Ireland is pure magic. Whether you want windswept cliffs, ancient castles, fairytale forests, or a cozy countryside retreat, you’ll find it all here. Plus, the warm Irish welcome is second to none!
Can we legally get married in Ireland if we’re from another country?
You can indeed! But there are a few rules to follow. You’ll need to give at least 3 months’ notice to the Registrar in the district where you’re getting married. If you’re from outside the EU, you’ll also need a Marriage Visa.
Many couples choose to do the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony here, this gives you complete freedom over how, where, and when you say your vows!
What’s the difference between a legal and a symbolic ceremony?
A legal wedding means following Ireland’s marriage laws, using an officiant registered with the Irish/uk government, and completing the paperwork.
A symbolic ceremony is just as meaningful but without the legal side of things. It’s perfect for couples who want complete freedom over their ceremony, location, and timeline.
Do we need witnesses for a legal wedding?
Yes, you’ll need two witnesses over 18. If it’s just the two of you eloping, don’t worry we can help arrange witnesses for you.
What locations are there for eloping in Ireland?
Ireland is full of unreal locations, but here are a few of our favorites:
- Dunluce Castle – A breathtaking medieval ruin on the coast.
- Kinbane Castle – A hidden gem perched on a dramatic sea cliff, offering stunning views and an intimate, peaceful setting.
- Dunseverick Castle – A historic ruin with spectacular coastal scenery, perfect for couples wanting a wild and remote elopement spot.
- Causeway Coast – Think rugged cliffs, hidden beaches, and dreamy sunsets.
- Private Estates & Venues – If you fancy a cozy, intimate space with a bit of Irish charm.
Not sure where to start? Tell us what kind of vibe you’re after, and we’ll help you find the perfect spot!
What kind of ceremony can we have?
Ireland gives you lots of options:
- Humanist or Spiritual Ceremony – A non-religious but deeply meaningful option.
- Handfasting Ceremony – A beautiful old Celtic tradition where your hands are tied together with ribbon.
- Religious Ceremony – If you’d like a church wedding.
- Symbolic Ceremony – Perfect for couples who want to say their vows their way!
What’s the weather like? Will we need a backup plan?
Irish weather… it likes to keep us on our toes! Even in summer, you can get a bit of “four seasons in one day” which, to be fair, makes for some stunning photos!
We always recommend having:
✔ Warm layers (even in summer, trust us)
✔ A nice shawl, jacket, or wrap
✔ Comfy shoes for outdoor locations
✔ A backup indoor option, just in case!
Can we bring guests?
Of course! Many elopements in Ireland are just the couple, but if you’d love to have a few loved ones with you, that’s no problem. Keep in mind that some outdoor locations have guest limits or might not be super accessible for older guests.
For an intimate elopement, we recommend keeping it under 25 people, that way you can still keep the magic of an adventurous, relaxed day.
Do we need a wedding planner?
You don’t need one, but if you’d like a stress-free, easy experience, then we would say ‘yes’, we’d say it’s worth it! We can handle all the logistics, from location scouting and legalities to finding the best local vendors (think flowers, hair & makeup, and more).
If you want to just turn up, enjoy your day, and soak in the magic of Ireland, let us take care of the rest!
How much does it cost to elope in Ireland?
It really depends on what kind of day you want! A simple, relaxed elopement would be the least expensive, while adding extras like luxury venues, videographers, or bespoke experiences can increase the budget.
Let us know your vision, and we’ll help tailor everything to suit your budget.
What’s the best time of year to elope in Ireland?
Every season has its own magic:
- Spring (March-May) – Lush greenery, mild weather, and wildflowers.
- Summer (June-August) – Longer days, warmer weather, but a bit busier with tourists.
- Autumn (September-November) – Stunning golden colors and fewer crowds.
- Winter (December-February) – Moody, atmospheric, and perfect for a cozy, dramatic elopement.
Can we include Irish traditions in our ceremony?
Absolutely! Some of our favorite Irish wedding traditions include:
- Handfasting – An old Celtic ritual where your hands are tied together with ribbon.
- Claddagh Rings – A symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship.
- Sharing a Quaich – A celtic tradition of drinking from the same cup to symbolize unity.
- Irish Music & Dance – Fancy some live trad music? We know some brilliant musicians!
What’s the best way to get around Ireland?
Renting a car is by far the easiest way to get around, especially if you’re visiting remote locations. Just remember, we drive on the left here!
Can we honeymoon in Ireland after we elope?
Oh, 100%! Ireland is an incredible honeymoon destination. You could:
